I’ve often heard about the significant increase in minorities and women owning and carrying guns in the past ~20 years.
What hurdles did you encounter when making the decision to become a gun owner, from purchasing your first gun to obtaining training to deciding how to broach the topic with family and friends?

As a smaller man, what are the best non-firearm self defense options I have at my disposal? Carrying a firearm isn’t always an option for me and, while I wouldn’t say I’m out of shape, I simply don’t have the mass to comfortably go toe to toe with someone much larger than me.
Obviously de-escalation and leaving the situation will always be my first choices but as a member of a targeted group that won’t always be an option.

My wife and I need to get another cat for home defense, since the loss of one has left a hole in our defensive capabilities and strategy. My wife favors a ultra-compact model, like Cornish Rex, Singapura, or even skipping a cat entirely and getting a business of ferrets. I favor a mid-sized model, like a serval or a bobcat. I think that a mid-sized model will be better for patrol and perimeter defense at the cost of concealability and portability, but my wife insists that we need a cat that’s easily portable so we can keep it close all the time.
We live in a pretty rural area, so we can’t depend on the police to arrive in a timely fashion to defend us from moths/crickets, empty boxes, lasers, or balls of paper.
Should we compromise on a compact model, like a Main Coon or Savannah? We both agree that a full-size cat is too much cat for our needs.

  1. The tactical feline question and the answers from Karl and Annette had me thinking about my 2 cats, both are rescues (1 from a shelter and 1 a former street cat I took in) my ex shelter boy is half Maine Coon (not sure about the other half) and my ex street cat girl is half Manx and half British Shorthair. Both are excellent hunters and companions but have very different personalities, my boy is more curious and outgoing while my girl is more reserved and cautious around unknown people and animals. When they are both outside they often co-operate to counter threats (stray cats rarely come near our house now lol), but often retreat seperately if unknown humans enter the house.
Ultimately my final conclusion I have to give is to choose the cat who chooses YOU, both of my cats chose me as their human when I met them and are very loyal companions, don't let pre-conceived ideas of what you want in a pet drive your choices. I didn't choose either of my 2 (I really only wanted 1 cat but my girl knew where there's already a cat there's cat food lol) and I wouldn't trade either of them after 4 years together.

  2. Anecdotal evidence, but my parents live on a corner lot in a large city and growing up there was always opportunistic thefts happening. Mostly just back yard browsers and teens rummaging through cars. My little brother got a rottweiler mutt last year who is obnoxiously loud and 100+ lbs, and strangely enough, their belongings have stopped walking off in the middle of the night. He (the dog) also knocked over a stranger who accidentally walked into the wrong house and chased him out, barking but not biting. I was very surprised by how this (unfortunately) poorly trained dog behaved. All this to say, it does seem that a large, loud dog does seem to dissuade the less determined "bad guys".

  3. If they're razzing you, taking the piss, teasing you, telling jokes(even off colour ones)…
They like you. You're one of them.
If everyone is quiet… that's a whole different thing.

(edit) i'm openly gay, very effeminate, but still accepted at my local range and shop. The community is more accepting than many think.

  4. The best martial arts training is the one where you can find a really good instructor and club close enough that you can attend regularly. A great instructor and a club where you can train hard in a way you're comfortable with, with people in your dojo who will push you without being bullies and seniors who are there to build you up… that matters a lot more than the top trumps of which martial art is better… and to be honest if you train long enough in any traditional art you end up coming to some of the same things eventually.

  5. really glad you brought self defense for guys. small person or like most of us will be, simply old or worn out. i'm a big guy but busted back, knees etc. unfortunately here guys are almost universally considered an offender if you manage to fend off an attacker. which runs into the topic of what can you do in places where you cannot have weapons or peeper spray etc.
i would like your thoughts on peeper spray vers attackers on drugs.
the weird rules here is that self defense is legal, having anything for self defense is illegal. also anything you use in self defense must be equal or less than what the attacker is using.
your expected to flee (sucks for you if you can't) or play victim.
one of the other quirks is that the crims usually know the law pretty well and are known to call the cops on their victims, especially if you fend off their attack. i've had that once before, fortunately the cops thought it was funny.

  6. @53:00, my dog weighs in at all of 7 pounds. She's not going to take a bad guy down! She'll go for days without making a sound (except at the cat!). That said, her yips & barks, with body language, have meaning. She lets me know about things out of the ordinary before i might otherwise notice. In the context of personal security a dog can be an excellent alarm system for all kinds of things, not just bad guys. Everyone should have a dog!

  7. I find pepper spray or similar self defence irritants to be ok, getting bear sprays and similar special heavy duty stuff… that is going a step beyond potentially.

Had a Canadian farmer show me difference on human skin between the two…

A small dose of the bear spray on the back of his hand caused almost immediate irritation and red rash and he pointed out he had contact before so this was a LOT less then the first time.

It according to him depends on what the base is that is used for it and whether or not they are the type that needs to be sprayed on the muzzle or vulnerable area or the ones that will affect them even if you do not get them straight on the muzzle.

You needed to ask the vendor what you are looking at, the heavier stuff can be quite dangerous even if you are not allergic to it.

  8. Great video, however its my understanding using bear spray on people is legally the same as using wasp spay on a person. Don't use something with a legal flaw use people spray.

    Love the content.

  9. 53:00 I feel like a good dog is like a smoke detector. It doesn't prevent the events you fear most, but it prevents the most likely problems. Our dog runs to me when anything scary happens. She will not defend our household. But she has been rock solid on the mental health front especially during the pandemic. Extremely supportive of the whole family. Also, if she flees to me because she is scared of an intruder I know she is ridiculously gentle and I trust her judgement. I'm going to fight.

  10. 32:50 With non-lethal devices of limited utility l might simply offer to train with them. If in sparring I keep beating their new toy, it might send the message better than a link to an expert who says it is bad.

  11. I have discovered that one of my ancestors, a German immigrant, after arriving on the East coast in the early 1870s immediately joined the Army and was stationed at a fort in the Arizona territory. After serving for about 6 years and being in all kinds of battles out there, he did something bad and was court-martialed out of the Army. He then became an outlaw, robbing stores mostly, including stores belonging to a guy named "Big Mike" Goldwasser (later changed his name to Goldwater). Apparently this was the grandfather (or father, not sure) of Senator Barry Goldwater. Arizona sent me copies of his arrest sheets and trial records, and he is shown in jail with a group of prisoners including someone called "The Kidd, Billy". He (my ancestor) was sent to prison, and eventually pardoned thanks to the Goldwaters who wrote a letter to the authorities saying he was a model prisoner and deserved his freedom. Anyway, I wonder if he rode with Billy Kid, which would have been hilarious— a German dude with a thick German accent riding around the Old West wreaking havoc. "Put yuuur hants app! Dees iss a schtickapp!" "Um, excuse me sir? I don't understand what you're saying." "I sait diss ist a SCHTICKAPP! Put your hants APP! Hande hohe! Schnell!"

  12. 24:56 love the flashlight recommendation, and I think the best defense in areas where weapons are banned is martial arts. A martial artist is never unarmed. And a lot of the principles work with impromptu weapons.

  13. Oh, yeah, accomplishments. I read a write-up a guy did on how European tracer is no good because it doesn't match 55-grain ball. He was pretty happy with his five-inch group at 200. Meh, right? The guy deviated enough from scientific method that I went back to re-read it and see how many problems I could find.
On second reading, I saw that it was a five-inch-RADIUS group at 200 FEET.
    Good grief.

  14. 17:45 Height and weight classes are a good way to think about self defense. I don't think Serena Williams needs a "women's" self defense class. She be fine with the men. I have smaller male friends who definitely need instruction that focuses on what to do if you are smaller.

  15. I forget which channel said this, but the best martial art is the one you are willing to put the most time and effort into. If you love Judo, Karate or Kung Fu and do it for a decade and compete and are an assistant instructor, you will do much better than a person who tried BJJ for a year several years ago. A WWSD AR is a great gun, but if you have years of experience with shotguns and your AR is collecting dust in your safe, then if your life is on the line you should forget about debating which is best and rely on what you are trained on. A great Judo teacher is better than a crappy BJJ teacher. Find a good teacher in a martial art you like. Maybe try to avoid certain soft styles, but with any practical martial art the amount of time and effort you put in is more important than finding the "best" martial art.

  16. When I saw the beaches of Normandy and thought about trying to charge machineguns across them it was overwhelming. My kids have been a couple of times and usually cry after the trip is finished. I now warn American friends their kids might need time to grieve after touring the various historical sites.

  17. My biggest issue with the cat punchy things is that most places brass knuckles are very very illegal. In some places their mere possession is a felony and in another jurisdiction right next door they could be perfectly legal. But the lay person will have no idea until they become charged with a felony

  18. A great channel for knife reviews is Advanced Knife Bro. He has a great sense of humor about knives and the knife collecting community, but you can tell he really has a passion and appreciation for quality cutlery.

  19. Im not shure if I would be able to make a 900 yard shoot. If I get a Accuracy International Arctic warfare with a good scope, matchgrade rounds and a month with a proffesional instructor. But I kind of think that would be what I want to even try.

  20. Just as a point of clarification, pepper spray is illegal for civilian ownership in the vast majority of the English speaking world (Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand), and the US is the exception to that rule.

  21. I wholeheartedly disagree that BJJ is objectively the best martial art for self defense. BJJ is great if you're only going up against one person, but if said person has friends with him/her and you don't, you're objectively fucked.
