I get upset when viewing Lockpicking fakery, where somebody OBVIOUSLY fakes an opening through deception. Don’t let tricksters steal your confidence! ANALYZE the video and CALL THEM out. SHAME them by leaving comments and thumbs down. Let’s RID ourselves of these scumbags – here are some of the methods they use to fake us all out.

  1. I am new to lock sport and filmed myself using a city rake to open a 6 pin ERA. euro lock in 8 seconds, not once but twice by rocking it gently and listening for the crunch of the pins, it was lucky but I am glad I filmed it and posted the video.

  2. I have many American 1100s, one of them rakes open in about 3 seconds and the rest I've never been able to rake open, it depends on the lock tolerances and the pinning

  3. I know you're retired now. But if this was a McNally video, he would have whispered something sweet to it and either whacked it or raked it oh so smooth such that it just falls apart.

  4. Does anyone know who actually did this and posted to YouTube first? Incredibly bad form and mental masturbation! This is so disappointing when Iโ€™ve been picking for a couple of years and see someone do that. Straight posers! Thanks Bonsai Bill for the heads up. Very good call!

  5. A needed rant for everyone. I've known about their tricks to pick it so fast when my father taught me about this stuff. I have a medico I still cannot get open. No key.

  6. Love this video. I'm in this hobby for years. So my experience of picking lock in hand and sitting is easier!….but 2x longer picking locked onto something or parallel door…. but videos are all about sitting with hand/vice….I would rather see real world applications…because everything changes when standing/kneeling parallel/ locked onto. 19 years and these are my conclusions….thank you and stay legal. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Coming back to this after some time, I still regard Bill's picking videos as the gold standard. I'm finally starting to make progress and be able to pick some of my ALs; I've recorded a pick and gut with a view to putting in for a belt ranking, but I've not pursued it yet. Why? Because there are times (particularly in the reassembly) where the lock is out of frame. I have poor vision and poor fine motor control, so I have to be up close and personal with the lock; but I do not feel I can realistically claim a successful open in the eyes of a third party unless they are able to completely satisfy themselves about the legitimacy. I will therefore keep reshooting, or picking extra locks on camera to try and build up my credibility, but until I can achieve what Bill discusses here, I could be a phony in the eyes of the critical observer. The viewer should never have to take my word for it.

  8. Lock sport is all well and good and I enjoy it too BUT itโ€™s a lot different in a vice on your table. Try doing it in rain, cold, heat, wind, etc. with a woman that has a bunch of crying kids impatiently waiting while the worn, gritty lock is on a door handed opposite of the storm door making it really hard to get to. Thatโ€™s REAL lock sport.

  9. I cracked open a YALE 5 Pin lock, Every Pin is a Spool Pin… Making the lock seem "Secure" – After close inspection of the keys, i found that EVERY YALE LOCK we have is the same key from the factory !!!

Why have 5 security pins with only 1 production key ?

  10. ok… now we are at 6:02… and youve just acused someone of rigging the core but you have no idea whether he did or didnt actually do that… did you speak to him and he confessed? highly doubtful… you kinda just sound like youve got a case of the sour grapes… but i digress… by all means continue..

  11. What is the motivation? This is one of the classic 'school-yard' taunts; "You think you're so smart. You think you're better than me." These are people who fake it on videos have fragile egos and just enough brains to say, "Ha ha that'll show them."

  12. Many thanks to Bill for the years of hard work and invaluable content. I took up lock picking as a means to help me quit smoking ๐Ÿšฌ and was easily discouraged as I am very mechanically inclined and usually pick things up right away. This is the first video from this channel I ever saw and I certainly wouldn't be the picker I am today and may have never quit smoking without him. I wish you the best in your retirement and again thanks for all the videos!

  13. This was one of the first of your videos that hooked me and sent me down my own journey. I thank you for sharing your knowledge and everything you have done for the locksport community. You are doing the right thing by focusing on family. Enjoy them and your retirement.

  14. Iโ€™m studying to be a locksmith I know this is 8years old but this video does help explain the complex of picking locks, I been practicing picking locks for only 6 months and I still come across locks that give me a challenge

  15. It's truly a shame that anyone that finds it necessary to fake a successful pick is someone that has truly lost the plot. The harder a lock is for me to pick, the bigger my grin is when my tension bar finally gives way to my efforts. I wouldn't cheapen that feeling for anything.
Cheers and thanks for reminding us all what is important to this and any other worthwhile endeavor.

  16. On most any TV western, after the robbers make off with the iron-strapped strongbox one of them takes aim with his single-action Colt .45 revolver and shoots the padlock just once. It instantly springs open. None of the several curious bystanders ever get injured by a bullet richochet, or a flying piece of the lock. Somehow this appears much more fake than it needs to be.

  17. this is why you are my favorite locksmith/lockpicker on YouTube, you show the human side of it and honestly even lockpick lawyer makes me lose confidence because of how easy it looks when he picks anything. thank you for this video and all your videos they are the best.
